Pipe and Plate Welding Positions For Groove Welds

Pipes and Plates can be welded in various positions that are mentioned in ASME Section IX. Now we see various position of pipe and plate for Groove weld.

Welding Positions For Groove Weld:

There are two type Groove Weld Position:

  1. Plate Position for Groove Weld.
  2. Pipe Position for Groove Weld.

PLATE POSITIONS:

There are four type of welding positions in plate to plate Groove welding technique. This are following:

1G or Flat Position:

Plate in a horizontal plane with the weld metal deposited from above. Refer to figure shown below.

2G or Horizontal Position:

Plate in a vertical plane with the axis of the weld horizontal. Refer to the Figure shown below.

3G or Vertical Position:

Plate in a vertical plane with the axis of the weld vertical. Refer to the Figure shown below.

4G or Overhead Position:

Plate in a horizontal plane with the weld metal deposited from underneath. as shown in the below figure.

PIPE POSITIONS:

There are four type of welding positions in pipe to pipe Groove Weld technique. This are following:

1G or Flat Position:

Pipe with its axis horizontal and rolled during welding so that the weld metal is deposited from above. as shown in the below figure.

2G or Horizontal Position:

Pipe with its axis vertical and the axis of the weld in a horizontal plane. Pipe shall not be rotated during welding. as shown in the below figure.

5G or Multiple Position:

Pipe with its axis horizontal and with the welding groove in a vertical plane. Welding shall be done without rotating the pipe. as shown in below figure.

6G or Multiple Position:

Pipe with its axis inclined at 45 deg to horizontal. Welding shall be done without rotating the pipe. As shown in the below figure.

Welding Position for Fillet Weld:

There are two types of Fillet weld position:

  1. Plate Position for Fillet Weld
  2. Pipe Position for Fillet Weld.

PLATE POSITIONS:

There are also four types of plate to plate fillet weld technique.

1F or Flat Position:

Plates so placed that the weld is deposited with its axis horizontal and its throat vertical. As shown in below figure.

2F or Horizontal Position:

Plates are so placed that the weld is deposited with its axis horizontal on the upper side of the horizontal surface and against the vertical surface. As shown in the below figure.

3F or Vertical Position:

Plates so placed that the weld is deposited with its axis vertical. as shown in the below figure.

4F Overhead Position:

Plates so placed that the weld is deposited with its axis horizontal on the underside of the horizontal surface and against the vertical surface. as shown in below figure.

PIPE POSITIONS:

There are also four types of pipe to pipe fillet weld technique. These are Followings:

1F or Flat Position:

Pipe with its axis inclined at 45 deg to horizontal and rotated during welding so that the weld metal is deposited from above and at the point of deposition the axis of the weld is horizontal and the throat vertical. as shown in below figure.

2F or Horizontal Positions:

Pipe with its axis vertical so that the weld is deposited on the upper side of the horizontal surface and against the vertical surface. The axis of the weld will be horizontal and the pipe is not to be rotated during welding. As shown in the below figure.

2FR or Horizontal Rotated Position:

Pipe with its axis horizontal and the axis of the deposited weld in the vertical plane. The pipe is rotated during welding. As shown in below figure.

4F or Overhead Position:

Pipe with its axis vertical so that the weld is deposited on the underside of the horizontal surface and against the vertical surface. The axis of the weld will be horizontal and the pipe is not to be rotated during welding. as shown in the below figure.

5F or Multiple Position:

Pipe with its axis horizontal and the axis of the deposited weld in the vertical plane. The pipe is not to be rotated during welding. as shown in the below figure.

This all Welding position are commonly used in fabrication process.
