Methods for Development of Screw by Numerical Calculation:

Let,
D = Outer Diameter of Screw;
d= Inside Diameter of Screw;
P= Pitch of the Screw;
l= Minor length of Screw;
L= Major Length of Screw;

So,
h = (D – d) / 2;

1. l = √ ( P2 +( pi*d)2 ) ; Calculate Minor Length.

2. L =√ ( P2 +( pi*D)2 ) ; Calculate Major Length.

3. R = L*h / (L- l) ; r = R – h ;

4. α= L / R = l / r angle is in Radians.

therefore final profile cut from the circle as shown below and the form in to screw shape.

Example for Screw Flight Development using this Method:

Develop Screw layout for the Conveyer having Screw size 300 mm Diameter x 300 mm pitch x 3mm Thickness suitable for 2” NB pipe outer diameter 60 mm.

From given:

D = 300 mm;

P = 300 mm;

d= 60 mm;

h = 300 – 60 / 2 = 120 mm ;

l = √ { (300)2 + ( pi* 60 )2 } = 354.3 mm;

L = √ { (300)2 + ( pi* 300 )2 } = 989.0 mm;

R = (989 * 120 ) / (989 -354.3 ) = 186.9 mm;

r= 186.9- 120 = 66.9 mm;

α= L / R = 989 / 186.9 = 5.29 Radians

α=5.29*180 / pi = 303 degrere.
